In July 2018, part of Cinecittà’s historic film sets disappeared. A fire burned ancient Rome. The Manhattan street, built by Scorsese for Gangs of New York, was condemned and demolished. A few weeks earlier, I had shot some reels of 35 mm there, focusing on the sets themselves. Imperfect constructions and one-dimensional facades, these dilapidated architectures nevertheless conveyed the mystique of Cinecittà and the cinema that was created there. Lost to the Screen consists of a positive print of this 35 mm film presented on a projection reel hanging on a wall, along with a pair of scissors. The viewer is invited to cut a piece of the film and take it home •
